Slowing Down Wrinkles through Mental Techniques

Posted by – April 11, 2011

Eventually we all get wrinkles. It is a part of life that, while unpleasant, is a natural aspect of the aging process. Good genes and a healthy lifestyle can slow down the effects of aging, but sooner or later, fine lines and little wrinkles start to creep up.

Wrinkles happen when skin does not produce as much elastin and collagen, which work to keep the skin firm and supple. Wrinkles can be caused by many factors other than our genetic makeup. For instance, skin damage from sun exposure and smoking can show up many years earlier on persons who engage in sunbathing or smoking, or even by people who work outside or spend time around people who smoke.

Other types of wrinkles are brought about by repeated facial expressions. When a person laughs, the muscles under the skin are pulled into a shape that is repeated every time the person smiles. Frowning and squinting also bring about wrinkles around the eyes and on the forehead. These expression wrinkles and lines take some time to show up, but normally by the age of thirty, most people have some.

Gravity starts to work on producing wrinkles as the skin starts to lose its collagen and elastin elements. Sagging skin can cause eyes to appear hollow and the eyelids to droop, as well as the potential formation of jowls and upper lip thinning. While there is not a great deal you can do about gravity sagging or expression wrinkles, there are some techniques you can use to reduce the effects of aging and slow down the wrinkles!

Mental techniques are quite useful in reducing stress and improving a person’s frame of mind. To begin with, try always to think positively about all situations. It may seem difficult while you are in the midst of a crisis, but remember that the more positive your thought process, the more likely things will turn out okay.

Adaptability and flexibility are key to overcoming stressful events. When the way you are doing something or the way you are approaching a problem is not working, try to gain some perspective and change the way you are doing things. In other words, if banging your head against the wall isn’t doing the trick… stop doing it. Learn to change and you can eliminate a great deal of stress in your daily life.

Finally, try to practice visualization. When you are finding it hard to remain positive and optimistic, visualize the ending of the situation in a positive way. Actually see the end of the road and then act as though it’s already happened! You will be amazed at how much better you feel and stress wrinkles won’t stand a chance!
